There are French, Italian, English, German and Spanish towers in the castle. The castle, which was used as a prison since 1895, was bombed and damaged by French and British warships during the First World War. Some of the 14 cisterns in the inner castle are in use. In the inner courtyard, a tree museum (Arboreterium) has been created with tree and flower species suitable for the Mediterranean climate. Today, the castle has been transformed into one of the most famous underwater archeology museums in the world, and the northern moat is organized as a festival and showground.
