Built in 1910, the red-striped Albion Lighthouse stands tall 46 meters above the cliffs of Pointe-aux-Caves and offers spectacular views of the entire west coast. It is still in operation and managed by the Mauritius Ports Authority.
With permission from the lighthouse keeper, it’s possible to visit and climb to the top. The effort is well worth it—the panoramic view stretches from Pointe aux Sables in the north all the way to Flic-en-Flac in the south. The red-and-white stripes of the tower stand out dramatically against the crashing waves below, while the surrounding cliffs and coastal paths offer a perfect setting for walking or cycling, with the ocean breeze and endless horizon as your backdrop.
Below the cliffs, daring cliff divers leap into the sea, and local fishermen can often be seen luring in their catch. At sunset, the scenery becomes truly magical - a fusion of sky, sea, and sunlight painting the landscape in vibrant colors.
This cinematic setting even caught the eye of Hollywood: Serenity, directed by Steven Knight and starring Matthew McConaughey, was the first American film shot entirely in Mauritius. The character played by McConaughey lives in a converted shipping container just steps from the lighthouse, on this wild, uninhabited stretch of coast.
